I visited the island a month ago and had conversations with several locals. One man mentioned that starting a tourist business there could be quite profitable. I tried to show some kindness by tipping a few good people $20 each. It's clear to me that earning potential on the island is higher than on the mainland. For instance, my uncle, who works on the mainland, only makes around $70 a week.i tried to have him move to the island but he says rent is expensive there

Byron, It is unfortunate that you see Roatan through the lens of the socialist. Whether we like it or not, every Caribbean Island that was colonized by the English is much better off than those not, and much better off than the African country from which many came from. The schools are better. Healthcare is better. Crime is lower. The average income is much higher and most locals appreciate it.

The animosity between ( Garifunas, karibs and , the so called English blacks ) its so silly to this day its baffles me ( not evryone has hatred against the garifuna) but thats and issue that should be discussed and solved one and for all in my humble opinion

Just departed yesterday. The smoke was not good, but the rest of the trip was. The island gets more accessible by the day. Traveling here is easy and cheap when you do your research (like watching Byron). One thing to note about renting a car is that you will have to put down a deposit of about $1,500USD.

@BYRONJKP I think it would be very beneficial for Paddy town and Oakridge's talented tradesmen to get exposure. The money they make would definitely help those communities. Also think of the possibilities. Most people from the East End of the island speak three languages. They would be able to effectively communicate with expats as well as Islanders, there will be a need for this with the building going on on the East End. One other thing to think about for people who maybe don't know trades. they can translate Spanish to English for expats having homes built.

This reality is happening also where I live too… Maui Hawai’i. Many struggle to keep up with cost of living continuously appreciating while wages steadily lag behind. Add to that the US & foreigners driving prices of home to skyrocketing levels makes it a tragic situation for locals people. It’s more and more dramatic and I pray that things will finally go in a better direction for everyone here and in your country too, in fact for the global crisis humanity is facing now. We really need relief now! Take care brother❤

I was just in Roatan for the first time for diving. It is one of the most special places in the world. I understand growing it to attract more investment, therefore opening up opportunities for locals as well. This has to be done extremely, I mean, extremely carefully. If they end up damaging the environment and underwater world which is what makes Roatan so special and attracts mainly divers there, if that is damaged then it defeated the purpose really. I think it’s doable but the balance has to be maintained and extreme measures taken to protect an environment.
